Before Boys

June 11, 2010

My older sister told me once to think back to the time before I discovered boys and remember what I liked to do. Her theory on this was that would tell you what you really like. I suppose she is right. We are all a bit like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride, conforming to what we think a man would like in us.

The problem I had with this is that is my husband and I have been together since I was 13, and I have to admit I liked boys long before that. So I had to ponder this for a very long time. The two things that came to mind were jump roping (which I will blog about at another time) and climbing.

The monkey bars were one of my favorite things on the playground. I also loved sitting on top of my best friend’s mother’s clothesline pole. Something about being up higher than anyone else was so thrilling. But as you get older, it seems that the only climbing you do is up a flight of stairs and since I live in Florida I don’t even do that often.

One day, not too long ago, desperate to feel alive, I thought back on my sisters advice and took my youngest daughter and started climbing a tree. I think she thought I was nuts but it I can’t begin to tell you how it made me feel. I was me in that tree. Not weighed down with life…just me.

Take it from someone who knows. Take the time to remember who you are, and then go find her. It will bring a smile to your face.
